PROVENANCE Roland de Montaigu, Paris and New York Acquired from Sotheby's, London, July 6, 1982, lot 161 LITERATURE Maurer, African Sculpture: Selections from a Private Collection 1984: 25, catalogue of the exhibition Ann Arbor, Michigan, The University of Michigan Museum of Art, November 2 - December 23, 1984, and The Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois, January 19 - March 3, 1985 NOTE Fang masks of this type are iconic in the lexicon of African art. They are particularly recognizable from the well-documented dialogue between the aesthetics of African art and the Modern art movement of the early twentieth century. The most famous related mask was formerly in the collections of the artists Maurice Vlaminck and then André Derain, the mask was reportedly seen by Picasso and Matisse who were moved by the stark abstraction of the work--placing it at the genesis of the Modern art movement (see Flam in Rubin, ed. 1984: 212-214). See Perrois (1979: figure 97) for two related masks in the collection of the Etnografisch Museum, Antwerp, see Rubin (ibid. : 225) for a photograph of Derain's studio with the aforementioned mask on the wall.
