[Courtesy Wikipedia.], Flinders Petrie - Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie, FRS (3 June 1853 – 28 July 1942), commonly known as Flinders Petrie, was an English Egyptologist and a pioneer of systematic methodology in archaeology and preservation of artifacts. He held the first chair of Egyptology in the United Kingdom, and excavated many of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt in conjunction with his wife, Hilda Petrie. Some consider his most famous discovery to be that of the Merneptah Stele, an opinion with which Petrie himself concurred. Petrie developed the system of dating layers based on pottery and ceramic findings. [Courtesy Wikipedia] Publisher: Trubner & Co. City: London Year: 1886, 1888 Printing Information: First Edition Binding Style: Hardcover Number of Volumes: 2 Full Set: No Width: 10.5 Height: 13 Book Details: Naucratis or Naukratis was a city of Ancient Egypt, on the Canopic branch of the Nile river, and 45 mi (72 km) SE of the open sea and Alexandria. It was the first and, for much of its early history, the only permanent Greek colony in Egypt, acting as a symbiotic nexus for the interchange of Greek and Egyptian art and culture. The modern site of the city has become an archaeological find of the highest significance and the source of not only many beautiful objects of art now gracing the museums of the world but also an important source of some of the earliest Greek writing in existence, provided by the inscriptions on its pottery. The sister port of Naucratis was the harbor town of Thonis/Heracleion, which was only discovered in 2000. [Courtesy Wikipedia] Condition / Notes: These antique archaeological volumes are bound in printed paper-covered boards with cloth backstrips.
