Description : Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lega peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine pair of hand-carved wooden maskettes, each depicting abstract anthropomorphic faces. The ovoid faces present with slit-form eyes, slender noses with prominent nasal ridges, and petite mouths, all surrounded by several peripheral perforations. The first mask bears heavy white pigment surrounded by the natural wood color, and the second mask exhibits a yellow-white face surrounded by dark brown pigment. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 5.95 W x 3 H (15.1 cm x 7.6 cm) Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Condition report : Both pieces have minor abrasions, fading to pigment on obverse, and minor inactive insect damage, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout. Both have grass straps on the versos for display purposes.
