Learn more at aqfoundation.org ** Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lega peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A petite maskette of abstract anthropomorphic form that is hand-carved from a bovine bone or that of another ungulate. The teardrop-shaped vizard features a pair of almond-shaped eyes beneath serrated brows, a tall, slender nose, a slender mouth, and cheeks adorned with vertical scarification markings. The forehead and chin each bear a pair of drilled suspension holes for display purposes, perhaps as part of a larger costume. Size: 2.3 W x 4.9 H (5.8 cm x 12.4 cm), 7.1 H (18 cm) on included custom stand.
