Description : Central Africa, Cameroon, Kirdi peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A heavy throwing knife known as a mafa (also matakam) with a hammered iron body that terminates in a thick, rattan-wrapped handle and an integral suspension loop pommel. The blade head consists of two hemispherical curves that terminate in a blunt point, a narrow barb protruding from the exterior, and a hammered iron ring loop attached to the lower curve. Dozens of incised hash marks adorn both sides of the blade and give it a unique personalized presentation. Size: 6.75 W x 19.1 H (17.1 cm x 48.5 cm), 21.875 H (55.6 cm) on included custom stand. Condition report : Slight bending to overall form of blade head, with minor abrasions to blade head and suspension loop, and minor loosening to rattan fibers on handle, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout.
