Description : DESCRIPTION: Two African helmet masks. Includes: 1) African Kuba bwoom helmet mask. Kuba people, Kasai region, Democratic Republic of Congo, 20th century. Hand carved wood decorated with cowrie shells, blue, white and teal glass beads, seed pods, fibers and animal hide. One of three types of royal masks, used in foundation ritual performances. 16 x 11 x 12. Wear includes losses to seed pods and hair on hide. 2) African Kuba mukenga or mukyeem mask. Kuba people, Kasai region, Democratic Republic of Congo, 20th century. Full head mask with a raffia collar, sewn with white beads, cowrie shells, fur, a padded fiber ground, and the characteristic superstructure in the shape of an elephant's trunk. Ceremonial mask used to commemorate Woot, the first man created by God. 21 x 12 x 19. Light wear. MEASUREMENTS: See description. CONDITION: See description.
