This is the rating and price for 19Th C. African Ovimbundu Wood Staff

Description : Southern Africa, Angola, Ovimbundu, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A special scepter, perhaps once belonging to an Ovimbundu chief, finely carved from a hard wood, with an anthropomorphic finial, a long cylindrical body, and a flat, circular base. The finial depicts a naturalistic visage of an individual with slender, heavy-lidded eyes under an arched brow, delineated cheek bones, a flat nose, and a straight, full-lipped mouth held slightly open. His brown hair is brushed behind his ears, with several horizontal rows showing towards the front and then organized into vertical columns flanked by two pigtails in the back. A pair of double-arched striations on his brow represents folds of flesh along his forehead, while the x marks incised on each of his cheeks are likely intended as ceremonial scarification or face paint. Size: 2.75 W x 21.5 H (7 cm x 54.6 cm), 21.875 H (55.6 cm) on included custom stand. Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection, ex-private Florida, USA collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
