Learn more at aqfoundation.org ** West Africa, Nigeria, Cross River, Ekoi (Ejagham) / Bakor, ca. 16th to 18th century CE. A hand-carved stone figure of an abstract form known as an Ikom Monolith or an Akwanshi which locally translates to dead people. Carved from beige-gray stone, the elongated figure bears a planar base, an undecorated lower body, and a conical head with an undecorated skullcap. The face bears protruding ovoid eyes, a triangular nose, thin lips surrounded by deep nasolabial folds, and a protruding chin. Heads like this one were used as memorials for the deceased and were inserted into the ground with other familial stones. Size: 2.375 W x 3.2 H (6 cm x 8.1 cm), 6.6 H (16.8 cm) on included custom stand. Condition report : Minor nicks and abrasions to head, with light encrustations, and pitting in some areas, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to facial features. Old inventory label beneath base. Drill hole on bottom of head for mounting and display purposes.
