Description : The front section designed as a graduated fringe of cabochon sapphire, circular-cut diamond, ruby, emerald and ropework gold bell-shaped pendants, attached to a similar-set back chain, mounted in gold, in a suede case -- 16 1/2 in. long Signed by Van Cleef & Arpels, No. NY 55389 The lotus has been a symbol of the renewal of life in many different cultures as well as a symbol of the sun. Originating in ancient Egypt, this flower which opens at dawn and closes in the evening, mimics the rising and setting sun. Because of its symbolical significance, it became a source of personal adornment, both in its natural form and its stylized representation on jewelry. As a head adornment, fresh buds were tucked into the hair of guests at feasts, and boatmen would weave the flower into a chaplet to protect their hair against the wind. On festive occasions, fresh lotus blossoms were fashioned into wreaths and hung about the neck. This latter use influenced the design of this necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels where eleven lotus flowers, each set into twisted gold thread, are suspended from a gem-set chain.
