Although no gold was ever found, Burton covered some 2500 miles in four months, brought back 25 tons of samples, and surveyed the site of eighteen ancient settlements. His survey of the area, in the most northerly part of the Arabian peninsula, is held by many to be his greatest contribution to our knowledge of Arabia. The Land of Midian (Revisited) continued the work begun on the earlier expedition.
