Anmerkung : In September 1903, Gwelo Goodman departed England on board the S.S. Moldavia, bound for Bombay. Following a stay in Hyderabad, he left for Darjeeling, describing the journey as "quite the most glorious thing I have ever done. The scenery beggars description - the enormous mountains with views here and there of the Himalaya...tall, graceful trees towering away up towards a lovely blue sky. The blue haze all down the valley below is marvellous. The trees especially are so beautiful...mostly young but so slender, tall and graceful." He rose at dawn every day to paint "twelve pictures in twelve days...eight or nine hours' work a day...nothing could spoil the surrounding valleys and mountains...I've never been so moved by scenery in my life, the grandeur of it is simply overwhelming...we have had grand views of Kingchingunga (sic)" (the artist, as quoted in Newton Thompson, p.14-15).Gwelo Goodman returned to England in March 1904; his exhibition of seventy pictures from his tour of India, at the Leicester Galleries in January 1905, was an immediate success.
