Anmerkung : Provenance:Gifted to Gen. & Mrs Thomas Holcomb, Pretoria, 1948;A private collection.Thomas Holcomb (1879-1965) was the first US Marine to achieve the rank of General. On March 9 1944, following his retirement from the Marine Corps, President Roosevelt nominated Gen Holcomb for the position of United States Minister to the Union of South Africa. He resigned from this position on June 15, 1948. The above lot was presented to General Holcomb and his wife by the members of the staff of the American Legation at Pretoria and the Consular Officers stationed in South Africa on the occasion of his resignation.
