Anmerkung : COLLECTOR'S NOTE In this captivating depiction of the legendary singer and social activist Miriam Makeba, Sam Nhlengethwa brilliantly captures the essence of Makeba's spirit, paying homage to her iconic status and the profound impact she had on society. In 2013, the same year Sam Nhlengethwa created this work, he exhibited at the 2013 Venice Biennale as part of the South African pavilion, titled Imaginary Fact: Contemporary South African Art and the Archive. The following year, a major retrospective exhibition, titled Life, Jazz and Lots of Other Things, was hosted by SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia which then travelled to the Carter Centre in Atlanta. Nhlengethwa’s practice features in important publications, including Phaidon’s The 20th Century Art Book (2001).
