Geschichte der Kunst is 'the first comprehensive attempt to rethink the larger patterning of the history of art' ( Dict. of Art ) since Vasari's Lives (see lot 17). Having studied classics, theology, mathematics and medicine, Winckelmann worked in the library of Count Heinrich von Bnau in Saxony, researching a history of the early Holy Roman Empire, and later, at Rome, for Cardinal Alessandro Albani, whose collection of antiquities was renowned. Winckelmann focussed in particular on the art of ancient Greece and provided the fullest account of it to date. Complemented by study of Roman, Egyptian, Etruscan and near-eastern art, his work elucidated a new, influential method of study: to elucidate patterns of development through a sequence of style. 'Winckelmann forged a highly efffective synthesis of the available visual and verbal evidence that continues to inform accounts of ancient Greek art to this day' ( Dict. of Art ). 'Lessing was an early and deeply impressed reader of the Geschichte and the publication of Laokoon in 1766 was the first example of Winckelmann's influence on the thought of this time' (PMM). Winckelmann met a tragic end. Having lived much of his life in Italy, he decided to return to his homeland in 1768, only to be stabbed by his companion, Francesco Arcangeli on that journey, and robbed of his possessions. Brunet V, 1463; Hoefer XLVI, 765-772; PMM 210.
