Kongo wood, reddish brown patina, encrusted black paint, traces of libation, with short legs and large-scale feet rising from a vaulted base, rectangular, free carved arms with both hands resting aside the bulging abdomen, provided with a cavity for insertion of magical mass and metal tags, a columnar neck supporting an oversized head with baloon-like coiffure, hole on top of the head, a previously inserted horn now missing, a wide face with symmetrical arranged, flat features and vertical incised forehead tattoo, a plant fibre tube with reptile skin filled with magical substances around the neck, slightly dam., crack (left side of the body), paint rubbed off (left side of the head), the Nsapo are a small ethnical group in the southern centre of Zaire. Once they were part of the Songe-Beneki clan, which was pushed from the Songe enclave by Arab traders and their local allies. Thus they were detached from their own traditions and came under new cultural influences. These were not only African, from the Lulua and Luba, but also European. This fact is reflected in the wide variety of sometimes unrelated styles. The Nsapo have no masks, they created mother and power figures with the characteristica of outsized heads. There were a few renowned carvers among them, the Master of Beneki and the Master of the sitting maternities.
