Ancient Egypt, Pre-Dynastic period, Nagada (Naqada) II, ca. 3700 to 3300 BCE.Remarkably rare and fine pottery conjoined kohl or cosmetic vessels from the earliest part of Egyptian history. Made before the first pharaoh, of Nile silt, each in acorn form joined at midsection, highly burnished surface, achieving the deep black finish by throwing the vessel into a large open fire. These are reminiscent and relatives of the black-top redware jars of the period, save the redware section. It is quite likely this was intended to be two-toned but the vessel was misfired. Two suspension lugs indicate this was hung somewhere safe and out of reach of children. Size: 4.5 W x 3.125 H (11.4 cm x 7.9 cm), 3.375 H (8.6 cm) on included custom stand. Our research has found basalt jars in this form of the period and painted redware jars. This is the only example of a blackware double jar we can find making it exceedingly rare and exceptionally special!
