Beschreibung : Pair of figures of the komtin society Montol, Nigeria wood, dark brown patina, a male and a female, with v-shaped legs rising from clumsy feet, supporting an elongated, waisted trunk with accentuated navel and massive breast, flanked by long arms with shovel-like flattened hands, long necks crowned by bowl-shaped heads with flattened chin, enclosed by big, half-circular ears, the facial features recontoured by deeply cut grooves, straight eyebrows with big circular eyes flanking short noses, a flat mouth part with deeply hollowed opening below, zigzag-shaped scarification marks on the forehead, slightly dam., minor missing parts (toes and fingers of the male figure), crack (right side of the female, spread with mass), on base, the Montol are an ethnical group of about two million people, living along the northern banks of the Benue, between Jos and Shendam. Their sculptures were used for fortune telling and healing rites. They belong to a men society called komtin. Figures of the Montol are quite rare and their style is not clearly defined.
