Das ist der Preis für die folgende Bewertung: Pair Of Bassa Male & Female Wooden Sculpture

Beschreibung : The Bassa people occupy small, scattered villages in the geographic center of Liberia, cultivating rice and other crops. They have several female and male societies, including ''chu-den-zo'' and ''gela'' (pronounced ''geh-naw'') as well as secret societies like the ''Poro.'' Rather than having a centralized government or paramount chief, the Bassa depend on these societies to maintain order and social cohesion.Masks are the primary modes of expression for the Bassa, and figural sculptures such as these are very rare. The most stunning feature of these masterpieces are the elaborate masks that both figures are wearing. These pieces are an exceeding rare find for a number of reasons, the first being that they were made by the Bassa people. Additionally, they are shown wearing the traditional Bassa masks that are commonly used by these people, which is not often seen in most Bassa sculptures. Lastly, this is a pair of both male and female sculptures that were probably carved by the same hands, and used together in ceremonies. These sculptures were crafted in the early to mid 20th century, possessing a very fine patina with sacrificial incrustation and a very strong muscular form. Magnificent pieces! The rarity of Bassa sculptures makes this an especially great find.Provenance:These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Amsterdam beginning in the early 1960s. The items in this collection have been identified by George Mack, former director of the Arizona African Art Museum. The pair measures approximately 20 x 7 x 12 with a total weight of 11 lbs.
