Beschreibung : Central Africa, Gabon, Kota people, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A large wooden helmet mask, hand carved and made from multiple pieces of wood. The mask has a tall crest running from front to back along its central ridge, and a shorter crest running from left to right, also along its central ridge. The masked face is dramatic, with a heart-shaped brow, square cutout eyes underneath heavy, half-spherical lids, and a small, rectangular mouth. Kota helmet masks are known as emboli or mbuto, and they are worn during dances celebrating the initiation of adolescent boys.
