Das ist der Preis für die folgende Bewertung: Kuba Wood & Metal Tribal African Ceremonial Mask

Beschreibung : The Kuba people live in the Lower Kasai region of Zaire, or the Democratic Republic of Congo, in a rich environment of dense forest and savanna. Kuba arts primarily address status, prestige, and the court, manifestations of social and political hierarchy. Rank and wealth are expressed in extensive displays of regalia, featuring jewelry and rich garments of embroidered raffia cloth, as well as elaborate utilitarian items such as ceremonial knives, swords, and drums. Garments, furniture, and masks were embellished with valuable imported cowrie shells and beads. Masking was first introduced by a woman who carved a face on a calabash, creating the original model for initiation masks. The invention was taken over by men and incorporated into their initiation, and remains a male privilege. Once Bushong boys move into the nkan initiation shelter, they can wear masks and make excursions into the village, frightening women and children. More powerful masks are worn by initiation officials. The masked Kuba dancer is, in every instance, a spirit manifestation. This mask features elaborate decorations, with colorful beading, animal hair, and white cowrie shells which contrast wonderfully with the dark wood and metal plating. Provenance: These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Amsterdam beginning in the early 1960s. The items in this collection have been identified by George Mack, former director of the Arizona African Art Museum. Add this fantastic Kuba mask to your collection today! Piece shows some minor wear, but is in overall good condition for its age. Measures approximately 17.5 x 10.5 x 12 with a total weight of 6 lbs.
