Beschreibung : 10th-12th century AD. A glass flask of substantial size, formed in a mould from semi-translucent pale green glass, concave base, apple-shaped body with a rounded shoulder, very narrow cylindrical neck that tapers to an even narrower mouth, lower body with raised trailing diamond-shaped patterns around the shoulder in a regular pattern, down the body from each diamond is a thin line that gradually becoming shallower, three thick decorative bands of glass wrapped around the lower half of the neck. Islamic glass makers created wares for mosques, houses, and palaces, as well as for the early Islamic scholars who were pioneering the fields of optics and chemistry. Aleppo and Damascus were particular centres of production, with Egypt, Iraq, and Spain also producing incredible glass. These were then traded throughout the known world, including the Viking North Atlantic and China.This glass bottle can have been produced in Iran or Egypt. Antony John Scammell (1937-2019) was born, and lived his entire life, in the city of Bristol, England. Already from an early age he was enthralled by history and the heroes that it created. While serving overseas with the British Army, Antony began collecting coins and banknotes and this led to collecting a variety of different items throughout his life. From the early 1960s onward, Antony invested in acquiring ancient artefacts. Antony's vast collections started with Egyptian antiquities, but soon branched into Greek and Roman civilisations. The Roman civilisation fascinated him most and, when family commitments allowed, archaeological digs were coordinated in the west of England. These digs uncovered numerous artefacts, many of which were donated to local museums. In retirement, the collecting continued apace, branching into UK coins, British Empire banknotes and fossils.
