Beschreibung : Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A gorgeous figure carved from light gray steatite, depicting the goddess Isis seated upon a throne while nursing her infant son Horus. Isis presents wearing an ankle-length skirt while holding her left breast with her right hand and the back of her son's head in her left hand. The goddess wears an elaborate tripartite wig bearing a winged scarab across the brow, a crown of uraeus cobras standing in a circle, and a solar disk flanked by a pair of rising bull horns. Horus' head is adorned with his signature sidelock of youth as well as a royal uraeus cobra stretched across the center of his head. Isis's feet rest on a petite plinth from which a short tang extends for attachment. As a cult figure from this time period, Isis is often shown as a mother goddess as we see here. A touching portrayal, probably intended for a niche in a temple or a grave.
