III) (3) 'FOR IT IS A GLORIOUS LIFE AND I SHOULD LIKE TO LIVE IN TENTS THE WHOLE SUMMER': A LADY'S MAID TRAVELS WITH EGYPTOLOGIST AMELIA EDWARDS - a day-to-day account of the expedition, undertaken with her companion Lucy Renshaw, that inspired Edwards to write her best-selling A Thousand Miles up the Nile (1877), and to co-found the Egypt Exploration Fund in 1882.Jenny Lane's diaries not only give an insight into the world of female travellers at his time but also compliment Amelia's own well-known account of the trip. While Jenny herself is not mentioned in Amelia's book, her diaries are significant in confirming and correcting details of Amelia's version of events. Indeed, as Brenda Moon writes, 'Jenny's diary is the only surviving source for their travels in France and through Italy' (More Usefully Employed: Amelia B. Edwards, writer, traveller and campaigner for ancient Egypt, London, 2006), and also serves to confirm the identities of her fellow passengers, identified in A Thousand Miles up the Nile only by their initials, including the painter Andrew McCullum who accompanies Amelia on her sketching trips.The eldest daughter of a market gardener from Pulborough, Sussex, Jenny lived near Broome Park, Miss Renshaw's family home. At the age of 39, she proved to be the perfect companion to share the rigours of the Middle East and emerges as a strong character, open to all new experiences, she gives detailed descriptions of ancient sites interspersed with historical facts and notes – the Pyramids are gigantic, Howling Dervishes distressing, Damascus a little heaven for us weary travellers. She was present at the discovery of a painted burial chamber at Abu Simbel, describing how she was able to crawl in on our hands and knees... it is a beautiful chamber, an event which proved to be a pivotal moment for Amelia Edwards herself as 'No event on the journey did more to fire her enthusiasm for archaeology and preservation' (Moon, 2006). Nonetheless, she is very pleased to see dear old England again once more when they finally return home in 1874. After a break the narrative resumes on 26 February 1876 in the third volume, when she appears to be back in Egypt. The diaries have remained in the possession of Jenny Lane's family until now.
