Beschreibung : West Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A small, hand-carved wooden mask with slit-form eyes, semicircular ears, a petite nose, and puckered lips. A finely-incised coiffure rests above the wide forehead, and the face is painted in a lustrous chocolate-brown pigment. The Ogoni people, living in the fertile land east of the Niger River Delta, have a long history of masquerading, despite the efforts of Christian missionaries to stop this activity. Masks are used in a wide variety of situations -- entertainment, participation in rituals, and attending social events like funerals. Size: 4.75 W x 7 H (12.1 cm x 17.8 cm). Condition report : One ear missing. Age-commensurate surface wear, small nicks and chips to nose, chin, head, and verso, with fading and abrasions to pigmentation, otherwise very good. Nice light-brown patina throughout.
