Beschreibung : Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. early 19th century CE. Yoruban beadwork is among the most colorful African works of art. Here we have a meticulously beaded fly whisk, beaded with a repeated chevron pattern in glass beads, both round and tubular shape, of various blue, yellow, pink, red, green, black, and shimmery almost metallic grey hues. Four large petal-like pieces surround the large tuft of wavy animal hair at one end. At the other is a leather strap for attaching to a divination chain. Beads were a symbol of status and wealth among the Yoruba peoples and both sacred and secular objects were decorated with meaningful patterns and designs created with tiny glass beads. Fly whisks or irukere, the Yoruba word for fly whisk, is a decorative object used to symbolize royalty or an Orisha (deity).
