Beschreibung : Ape mask Dogon, Mali wood, dark brown patina, residues of white and blue pigments, of oval form with a superimposed apes face, beneath a slightly bulging forehead there is a deepened facial plane with rectangular open worked eyes flanking a small nose, a pointed opened mouth underneath, min. dam., cracks, signs of abrasion, small missing parts, on base, rare ! while the sculptures are carved by the blacksmiths, the masks are carved by young men of the awa society. All the masks belong to the awa societies and appear during the dama burial ceremonies. Those are held every two or three years to honour the deceased. They are depicting animals, objects or humans and are made of plant fibres, fabric or wood. H: 31 cm, (4628/004)
