Beschreibung : West Africa, Yoruba Culture, Nigeria, Gelede, ca. 1940 to 1950 CE. A finely carved and vibrantly painted wooden headdress, carved in 2 pieces with a male figural bust holding intricately incised hair with a serpent head pulled to one side in one hand and a weapon or ceremonial instrument in the other, the figure emerging from a rounded, slightly conical collar that would have been attached to a headdress. His face is decorated with three horizontal scarifications on each cheek - painted blue, wide open eyes with hollow pupils, heavy arched lids, and white pigment remains, full smiling lips also with white pigment remains, relatively naturalistic ears, and a high forehead. Additional red pigment covered areas on face and neck as well as blue pigment on cap. The torso is covered with an incised striped shirt painted with red, white, and blue pigments.
