Love Supreme ,2007
Medien:
In “Love Supreme“, the artist places the map of Africa in blue neon on a half-opened window. Like a glimmer of hope, this window seems to suggest a possible opening on the world, perhaps announcing the end of conflicts and peace between the peoples. However, if we look closer, a detail casts a shadow over this idyllic picture: the choice of the window's dark background seems to express an undeniable doubt as to the fulfillment of what seems to be a utopic dream. This work is part of his project “bricoler l'incurable” (tinkering the incurable) where he developed a work in the form of an endless beginning. This title is key to his imaginary, halfway between fiction and reality. He indeed is “tinkering”, when he says he wants to “simply build a space of possibilities”, as he does not hesitate to deconstruct and switch around his own works. In doing so, he uses complex installations where the light takes pride of place, combining neon lights, drawings, videos, photographs, sculptures and readymade artifacts, which are at the same time working platforms and exhibition venues. These arrangements named “Details” are provisional: these fragments ready to be brought into play again convey the image of an elusive reality in both its entirety and complexity. As he would rather build, as he says, “living spaces instead of viewing spaces...” Mohamed El Baz is an activator of unprecedented visual and existential combinations. By claiming to be “tinkering”, he breaks down and reconstructs the plastic and human borders through his experiences and reflections on art, reviewing from scratch the works and symbols of the different cultures through the minimalist processing he inflicts upon them. Undermining any ethnocentric effect, his art attempts to highlight the differences that underlie the emergence of a conscious cultural plurality.
