This plate (number 12) has been excised from the fifth volume of the first edition of Description de l'Egypte : ou, Recueil des observations et des recherches qui ont ete faites en Egypte pendant l'expedition de l'armee francaise (published in 1809), which details Napoleon's expedition to Egypt. Attributed to Dutertre and Baltard in the lower margin, this engraving depicts the iconic Sphinx with the pyramids in the background. This piece is from the holdings of Archaeologia Books and Prints. Established in 1983, Archaeologia was known for providing scholarly books of quality on the archaeology of Ancient Egypt, the Near East, Greece & Rome, and the Pre-Columbian Americas.
