Beschreibung : Wood, iron Bamana people, Mali Early 20th Century Related examples: Sotheby's, New York, 25 May 1999. Lot 176; Sotheby's, New York, "The Harry Franklin Family Collection of African Art", 21 April 1990. Lot 23 Dimensions (length x height x width): 31 x 10 x 4 in. (78.7 x 25.4 x 10.2 cm) Very good condition Provenance: Acquired by Raymond Handley in London or Paris, 1960-1970 In bamako style from the Northern region, this example bears a wonderfully delightful facial expression. While there are several versions of the story, the discovery of agriculture is credited to the hero Chi Wara, a half antelope, half human figure born from the union of the sky goddess Mousso Koroni and an earth spirit in the shape of a cobra. The headdress is in very good condition. There is a well-developed patina throughout and very minor surface abrasion. Note: the head is a separate piece, attached at the neck with iron. The construction is consistent with this workshop. The headdress measures 31 x 10 x 4 in. (length x height x width).
