He opened one of the two great pyramids of Giza and several tombs of the kings at Thebes, including that of Seti I. The plate volume accompanying his narrative '`was the first English work of any importance to use lithography'' (Blackmer). Belzoni's personal collection of antiquities and Egyptian artifacts was sold at Sotheby's in 1822. Alexander was keeper of prints and drawings in the British Museum. The present copy represents all that was published of an intended work: Engravings with a descriptive account... of the Egyptian Monuments, in the British Museum, collected by the Institute in Egypt, under the direction of Bonaparte, and surrendered to the British. The principal object illustrated is the celebrated green sarcophagus identified by E.D. Clarke in 1805 as being that of Alexander the Great, an extraordinary attribution which was soon to be the subject of great controversy. Hamilton was sent to Egypt by Elgin, whom he had served as secretary in Constantinople. Together with Clarke, he attempted to prevent the removal of antiquities taken by the French (notably the Rosetta Stone). He also superintended the safe transportation to England of the Elgin marbles.
