Beschreibung : Baga Nimba Shoulder Mask ”D’mba-Yamba”, Republic of Guinea One of the most imposing and spectacular masterpieces of Sub-Saharan African mask carving is the shoulder masks of the Baga, commonly known as Nimba masks. These masks were worn by powerful female dancers, symbolizing a woman at the peak of her existence - fertile, intelligent, and benevolent. The full breasts indicate that she has nursed children, while her upright posture conveys pride and power. The mask offered in the auction is an outstanding example of Baga carving art. Decorations in the form of relief-like incised lines and an abundance of decorative nails give it a unique and extraordinary appeal. Before their initial use, these masks were stained with plant sap, dark earth, and charcoal, and then consecrated with blood, palm wine, and palm oil, resulting in a patina-like layer that is partially preserved here. This is an exceedingly rare object acquired by Josef Vesely (1900 - 1987) between 1950-60. An old collection label from J. Vesely can be found on the right inside support.
