Beschreibung : Antelope mask nyanga Bobo, Burkina Faso wood, dull patina, polychrome paint, helmet-shaped base with crest, flanked by curved horns and long ears, pierced eyes, a slender curved snout underneath, pierced around the rim, min. dam., signs of abrasion, insect caused damage, repaired (right horn), masks of the Bobo may be seen as their most important art work. Even in small villages, twenty or more different types of masks are common, and they all have a specific task in the ritual events. Occasions for such masquerades are e.g. the male initiation ceremonies, the harvest festival or the funeral of a dwo, the son of the god of creation wuro, manifesting itself in a mask.
