Beschreibung : Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 2nd to 5th century CE. A beautiful and intricate textile fragment tightly woven from cotton and wool fibers in beige, chestnut brown, and red hues. The central column features a repeating program of octagons containing a single anthropomorphic figure as well as stylized feline creatures with claws and long tails. The flanking borders consist of interlocking vines or knots and abstract foliate motifs. One corner contains a red cord that borders what may have once been a slit for an arm or neck opening. The textile is mounted in modern times on a canvas backing over a stretched frame with a wire on the verso for suspension. This piece is ready to be displayed! Size of textile: 30 L x 18 W (76.2 cm x 45.7 cm), canvas frame: 34 L x 25 W (86.4 cm x 63.5 cm) Provenance: ex-Anchorage, Alaska, USA collection from the collection of a noted state senator acquired before 2000 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
