Beschreibung : Roman, North Africa, late Imperial Period, ca. 4th to mid-5th century CE. A beautiful mold-formed redware pottery oil lamp depicting a running wolf flanked by petite fill holes within the recessed tondo. The form of the lamp is defined by a squat foot, smooth walls, a tab-shaped handle, a circular shoulder exhibiting raised horseshoe and delta-form motifs, and a recessed neck channel leading to a wide wick spout. The striding wolf exhibits a smooth coat, a right-facing head with perky ears and a gaping mouth, and a bushy tail billowing off the posterior. A slender iron fragment is visible within one fill hole. Condition report : Petite iron fragment is encrusted within the interior cavity and is visible inside one fill hole, but is still quite fragile. Chip to area of handle, with softening to some finer details, and minor char marks to wick spout. Light earthen deposits and great remains of original coloration throughout.
