Beschreibung : Roman, late Imperial Period, ca. 4th to early 5th century CE. A sizeable and near-transparent free-blown vessel created with pale sage-hued glass. The jar has a concave base with a rough pontil scar, a globular body with several raised ribs around the circumference, a rounded shoulder, a deep interior cavity, and a tall collared rim which is slightly off-kilter due to the forming and cooling process. A pair of sapphire-blue rigaree trails zigzag around the body's exterior surfaces with an excess trail ringed above the upper band. Faint areas of silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence are visible across the exterior, with one dense patch of iridescence along a small area of the body's lower half. The near-transparent nature of this vessel is exceptionally rare, with the view through the other side being impeded only by the rigaree bands adorning the exterior. Size: 3.625 W x 3.5 H (9.2 cm x 8.9 cm). Ancient glass manufacture had begun in the 2nd millennium BCE in Mesopotamia and Egypt. The Greeks and Phoenicians advanced glass technology greatly in the latter 1st millennium BCE. In the early 1st century CE, Roman workshops began producing blown glass on a large scale. Eventually glass vessels came to replace a wide variety of pottery and metal wares in the ancient world. Ancient Roman glass was traded far beyond the Roman Empire. Roman glass vessels have been found in Scandinavia, India, and in Han Dynasty tombs in China.
