Ancient Egypt, likely originating in Cyprus, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A hand-carved alabaster alabastron of flat-bottomed form that exhibits hues of tan, cream, goldenrod, and wheat, these colors are translucent and can be seen when placed next to a light source. The tapered vessel features a pair of lug handles that protrude from the shoulder before the body terminates in a rolled rim that perhaps once accommodated a lid. Though the ancient alabastron form originated in Greece, its image became ubiquitous with luxury and opulence and spread throughout the ancient world.
