He was born in Brighton. As an architect he worked in partnership with John Thomas Micklethwaite from offices at 15 Dean's Yard, Westminster, London. After his retirement Clarke continued to live in Egypt and died in Mahamid in August 1926. There is a small brown smudge at the lower outer edge of page 225, continuing through the end of the book. This work is illustrated with numerous textual figures and plates.
