Beschreibung : This originally hand-colored engraving is from Rene Primevere Lesson's Histoire naturelle de Buffon. Mammiferes. Oiseaux. The work was published in Paris by Pourrat Freres between 1833 and 1834. Buffon in this case refers to a book on zoology. The majority of 19th century natural history works were modeled after Buffon's work and thus often mentioned his name in the title to credit his influence. Lesson's work here is noted for its excellent rendering of the images / plates of Buffon's work done by Pretre, Travies, & Oudart. In addition to the renderings after Buffon, the engravings are from a section of the work titled Complement ou histoire naturelle des animaux rares decouvertes par les naturalistes et les voyageurs depuis la mort de Buffon. This included a number of Australian mammals and birds as well as the New Zealand Kiwi.
