They speak a language in the Mande branch of the Niger-Congo family of African languages. The Guro originally came from the north and northwest, driven by Mande invasions in the second half of the 18th century. The Guro mask represents the spirit of Gu, the wife of the supernatural being Zamble. Gu is often depicted as elegant, graceful, serene, and beautiful. Important and notable characteristics found in Guro art include a skillful combination of human and animal forms. Notable features on masks include almond-shaped eyes, rounded foreheads, finely sculpted noses and mouths with small but sprouting lips. The coiffures and headdress are delicately sculpted and elaborate. The masks are normally colorful and coated with natural dyes. A headdress or delicately carved hairstyles indicate that the being is represented in its art form, meaning that heavy objects should not be carried on its head as this indicates wealth and prosperity in African tradition. Delicately crafted and colorful sacred Guro masks are used and honored during sacrificial gatherings, funerals, and celebrations. They honor protective spirits called “zuzu,” which were housed in shrines. A very elegant Guro mask, unusual with chicken feet carved from ivory holding the head.
