Beschreibung : covered by a lid carved separately, pointed breasts above, sloping shoulders with arms spread-out, the long neck supporting a tapering tubular head with incised facial features, a large medial crest above the crown, splayed lizard designs on the back and neck, encrusted brown patina. Height 21 1/2 in. (54.6 cm.) As stated by Fagg, 1978, p. 26 refering to a very similar statue: This is by the same carver as the fine figure embodying a mirror case in the Nigerian Museum which represented Igala figure sculpture in the exhibition of African Sculpture at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. in 1970. It was the work of a living carver (now in his middle fifties) named Umale, who lives in Ukuaja, a small hamlet far from any main road, near Iyale in the Dekina Division of Kwara State, central Nigeria. According to Van De Velde-Caremans (1976, p. 124), one of the sculptures in this style now in the Brooklyn Museum was collected at the turn of the century, which would push back the birth of this style earlier than Fagg had initially suggested. Other sculptures made in the same style are statues without the container, boxes and masks.
