Beschreibung : Face mask zakpai Dan, Elfenbeinküste wood, blackish brown patina, encrusted in some areas, of oval form, a protruding forehead with raised vertical middle ridge and concave vaulted facial plane, circular pierced eyes with raised rim flanking a short nose, a big diamond-shaped mouth below, pierced around the rim (double in the lower half), incised scarification marks on the forehead, accentuated by kaolin rubbed into the deepenings, metal stick at the chin, small remnants of red fabric, originally covering the whole mask, dam., the whole surface signed by old insect caused damage and once inserted, now missing metal tags (forehead, nose and mouth), missing parts at the back of the rim, on metal base, such masks are called running juju - runner mask. They are widespread among the northern Dan (because of the dry area they are mostly used there). Worn by the fastest runner of the village, they are supposed to warn the inhabitants and to call for help in case a fire breaks out. The mask is completed by a head gear with big leaves, called bülä and a rough costume with short fibre skirt. H: 25 cm, (4651/006)
