Beschreibung : Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. A fascinating relief of the bovine goddess Bat or Hathor skillfully hand-carved from the bone of an ungulate - a fitting medium for the subject matter! Wearing a short-sleeved tunic and a pleated skirt, the woman stands with legs crossed and gazes forth from sunken eyes beneath a heavy brow and a shoulder-length coiffure. Huge ears - reminiscent of those of a cow - flank her bulbous nose and fleshy lips. Size: 0.9 W x 3.3 H (2.3 cm x 8.4 cm), 3.7 H (9.4 cm) on included custom stand. Provenance: ex-John B.
