Beschreibung : Bembe Mask Democratic Republic of the Congo The Bembe live in the hilly area of “Itombwe” in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo near Lake Tanganyika. The most prominent and important people belong to the Bwami society, which was influenced by their Lega neighbors with whom they maintain important social ties. This rare “Eluba” mask with a very elongated head shows two faces in an elegant and abstract form. The 4 orbital cavities, concave but thick in relief, are alternately colored white and red. They have their eyes open and are perfectly positioned in the center. The marked geometry of the forms is the result of the creative freedom of the artist. The face is surrounded by numerous raffia fibers. These masks represent the spirit of the forest and were used in the “Butende” circumcision rituals that took place under the supervision of the high ranks of “Bwami” members.
