According to the African Art Museum The Ashanti are credited, however, with introducing representational art to this genre-so anything depicting a person or animal, post-1700, can rightly be called an Ashanti gold weight. This lovely example depicts a chicken, a popular symbol of life as a bearer of eggs. All of the bronzes from the Pickard Collection and have been checked out with a museum expert on ancient bronze who worked for both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Sackler Foundation.
