Beschreibung : Southern Africa, Mozambique or Tanzania, Makonde peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine helmet mask carved from lightweight wood. The mask presents an expressive countenance formed from a wide nose, huge lips enclosing a row of serrated, white-painted teeth, downcast eyes painted with white and black pigment, and sets of raised scarification marks across the cheeks and forehead. The wide neck line enables the wearer to comfortably fit their head inside, and the top displays tufts of coarse brown hair. Covered in dark-brown pigment, this is a fine example from the Makonde.
