(88.9 cm.) Provenance: Pace Gallery, New York, 1981 This large and delicately carved Mende female belongs to a group of exceptional large scale figures. These female figures, like the Sowei masks, reflect the Mende ideals of womanhood and beauty in their elegant hair style, small features and neck rolls. According to Glasgow, Art of the Mende from Sierra Leone, 24, the sculptures '.. are reputedly used by women diviners of the Yassi society. The Yassi society, as reported by travellers at the end of the last century, was a secret society common to both the Mende and Sherbro...Mende people had a great faith in the healing properties of Yassi medicines and in pronunciation delivered by Yassi officials. Yassi medicine was kept in a village hut ordinary in construction but disguised by spots on the exterior. Within, partitioned off by mats, was kept the Yassi medicine, and placed beside it was a Minsereh. The proximity was important to that the figure which was consulted by the people on various matters, could transmit the magic of the medicine with which it was in communication. These figures were already described by Volz in 1907 and by Alldridge in 1901. This Mende figure is part of the group which were undoubtedly carved before the turn of the present century.
