The Senufo peoples, according to scholar Timothy Garrard, were inspired to make metal masks by first observing the neighboring Diula peoples and using Diula masks. Senufo casters say that circa WWI they made masks to sell to the French at Korhogo. By the 1930s metal masks became accepted for local use. Production increased in 1950s with sales to tourists, and increasing elaboration and number of casters. This Senufo mask, made of copper alloy, was cast in the style of the more widespread masks carved in wood (kpelie or kpele-yehe).
