Beschreibung : North or West Africa, Tuareg, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A sizable hand-woven rug or tent mat, comprised of cotton fibers that are dyed in hues of tan, black, and red. Both sides contain full length stripes, but the more intricate zigzag motif and diamond design are embroidered and visible on only one side of the cloth. Known for their durability, mats like this one serve a wide variety of purposes for the Tuareg of North Africa, such as prayer rugs, tent hangings, and blankets.
