They were made of carved wood with pigments and natural fibers.Suku masks like this one are typically related to initation rites among young men of the village. These kinds of masks were often carved by the children themselves and worn upon the completion of their ceremonies.Bambara masks like this one celebrate the harvest and the animal spirits that preside over the Bambara's daily lives. This Bambara mask is likely a ram, danced as part of Bambaran'tomo and koro secret societies.As these decorative masks were made in the middle of the 20th century, they may have been produced in Ghana.Both masks are in good vintage condition.
